eCubed are engaged on many of Auckland’s Waterfront projects, working with noted national and international architects to help reshape Wynyard Quarter to become a key area within Auckland’s CBD.  This includes providing full building services design on the Viaduct Events Centre.

Wynyard Quarter represents a major opportunity for Auckland to regain connection with the waterfront, with its public park and high quality development connecting back to Victoria Park.

We developed a site-wide sustainability framework, including benchmarking. The masterplan includes two sustainable axes for water and energy, which will demonstrate state-of-the-art approaches to sustainability, and in particular, stormwater re-use and treatment, along with renewable energy supply.

A proposal was developed for renewable energy to be generated on-site and designed to make all the Quarter’s infrastructure (mainly lighting) carbon neutral, using a combination of localized photovoltaic arrays and wind generators. The street lighting also included an innovative mix of LED and dimmable electronic metal halide luminaires, with an Echelon lighting control system.

Street lighting consumes 30% of the council’s energy, and the system is intended to demonstrate a new way forward in this area. The intention is that all buildings within the Quarter achieve a minimum 5-star NZGBC rating.

Detailed Design work included building services design of the Viaduct Events Centre and ASB Waterfront Theatre, as well as Specialist Lighting Design for Jellicoe Street, Gateway Plaza and the Viaduct Events Centre surrounds.

Willis Bond assisted by eCubed won an international design and tender process for two leasehold blocks - a waterfront site on the corner of Halsey and Madden Streets overlooking the Viaduct Harbour and four sites in the heart of Wynyard Quarter, bounded by Daldy, Beaumont, Madden and Pakenham St.

We acted as ESD sub-consultants to the urban designers Architectus for the award-winning Wynyard Central Building, and with Athfield Architects on the 132 Halsey Street Building.

Gateway Plaza is a fantastic, open public space in the area just beyond The Wynyard Crossing pedestrian bridge, that links the Viaduct Harbour with Wynyard Quarter, Jellicoe Street, North Wharf promenade and the Viaduct Events Centre. This large public park features seating, art and steps down to the water’s edge.

Silo Park, at the western edge of Jellicoe Street, features the retained 35 metre Golden Bay cement silo and ‘six-pack’, in recognition of the area’s industrial heritage. Bookended by the marine sector’s superyacht berth and fit-out facility, Silo Park offers westward views of Westhaven Marina and the Auckland Harbour Bridge, with open air cinema on summer evenings.

This extensive transformation of Auckland’s Waterfront, completed in July 2011, has transformed the public interaction with the waterfront.  The images show the transformation from design into reality.  eCubed Building Workshop are proud to be involved in these exciting waterfront urban renewal projects.
